Assam is a beautiful state in northeast of India with amazing people and natural beauty. In this post I will share some lesser known facts about assam that will surely amaze you.

  1. Assam’s capital is not Guwahati but Dispur which is a small area in Guwahati. Although Guwahati is a very big and main metro city but it’s not a capital.
  2. Ahom dynasty ruled Assam for over 600 years and no Mughal can ever entered in their territory during that period. Brahmaputra river and these great warriors played a very important role in protecting their people from Mughals.
  3. There are 3 types of Bihu festivals celebrated throughout the year in Assam.
  4. Kaji Nimu (Lemon) of Assam now has a unique GI tag and is associated with assam only. It’s hybrid of Lime and Lemon which gives a very unique and refreshing taste when eaten.
  5. There is a place in Assam known as “Mayong” which is popular because of Black Magic and witchcraft. Many people believe that people over there know how to turn humans into dogs with black magic although there is no proof to that.
  6. Sualkuchi a place very near to Guwahati Assam is known for it’s silk production and it is the largest village in Asia dedicated to silk work. Muga Silk which is exclusive to assam can be found here only.
  7. Kamakhya Temple which is dedicated to goddess kamakhya is a very powerful place, people believe that maa kamakhya resides there, there is an annual mela Ambu-bachi takes place at the temple where sadhu, saints come over there for the worship of goddess beleive that goddess will give them powers.
  8. There is no dowry system in Assam.
  9. When you go to assam avoid saying “Kela” for banana because it’s an offensive word there and can be disrespectful.
  10. Girls in Assam get married to a banana tree before their actual marriage. During teenage when a girl gets her first menstruation, a very special ceremony takes place which is known as “Tuloni Biya” in which first menstruation is celebrated and banana tree is used in that.
