In this post, I will tell you what is Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 in India, and how this will change the way social media and app companies will process and collect your personal data. Currently it’s in draft and very soon it will become an act in India so If you think somethings needs to be changed then you can suggest that to the government and contribute on your behalf. Although this act can be downloaded from Indian government website but it is difficult to understand such a big document so I am simplifying things for you.
- Transparency and Consent : Companies should tell you that what they collect from you in terms of your data and why they collect it. These things should be kept transparent so that you know what these companies knows about you.
- Data for Children and Minor: Extra care will be taken while collecting data of children and Parent’s consent is needed for this and their data should be handled very carefully with top most priority.
- Cross Border Data Sharing: Consumers and users data can only be sent or processed to countries where Indian government has given permission and have approved. There are some countries who does not have a very good reputation of handling data of India so our data should not be shared with them.
- Penalty and Data Breach: If any company does not follow this then they will face heavy fines and penalties and in case of data breach they have to pay heavy fines. This is very important because this will force them to handle our data carefully which is lacking these days.
- Rights of Consumers and users: You have right to ask these companies about the data they have about you and you can request them to delete it or correct it in case they have wrong data or information about you.
These are some important points from the act, there are some other things present as well but the main essence is mentioned above. The main motive of this act is to protect personal data of Indians to boost their privacy and make these companies accountable. I hope this post have helped you to understand what Digital Personal Data Protection Act. (DPDP) is and how this will change everything.
