Make your old windows laptop faster in 5 minutes.

So you are struggling with a slow and old windows laptop and you don’t want to get a new laptop for some reason, Well If you are facing this then you are at right place because in this post I will share some surefire ways to make any old windows laptop faster no matter which model and how old model you are using.

Step 1 – Check if your laptop has SSD or Hard-disk. HDD is slower and older hardware which has physical moving parts and they are good as cold storage but not good as a primary disk drive and these are slower then modern SSD which as NAND based storage with no moving parts and everything is chip based. So you can replace your SATA based HDD with a new SATA based 2.5 inches SSD and your laptop will become 2x faster and more responsive. This upgrade is the easiest one and will cost you around 2000 to 3000 rs.

Step 2 – Fresh install your operating system, No matter which windows you are using make sure the OS is fresh and free from bloatware and unwanted software. You can see which windows works best on your laptop from manufacturer’s website. Laptops are made for some specific version of windows and they work best on that particular os. If your laptop is very old then it might not get latest os and updates but it’s fine of you are using it with older software and offline usage.

Step 3 – Sometimes laptops works slower when there is no supported drivers for the hardware it is using, No matter how fast is your processor and graphics unit, if you don’t have supported drivers then you won’t be able to utilize your hardware so make sure you have the supported drivers up to-date for your hardware or components that your laptop has.

Step 4: Replacing your thermal paste and removing the dust from the cooling fan, If your laptop is old then there are high chances that the thermal paste of the CPU is gone and as a result your CPU is not cooling properly hence your laptop is hanging and now showing good performance.

Step 5: Uninstall unused software and apps, Some software services run in background even when you don’t use these software actively. If you don’t use any software in 2 months then you should uninstall it to save space and ram usage.

Step 6: Manage Startup programs:-

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager
  2. Click on the “Startup” tab
  3. Select the programs you want to disable and click “Disable

Step 7: Upgrade your RAM if you have extra slot. (Buy same specs ram)

By doing these things you will be able to fix your slow laptop normally but if your laptop is still slow then you might be using very old machine and in that case its better to buy a new laptop or switch to lighter os like chrome os flex or any light weight linux version like Ubuntu.
