In this post I will write and discuss about the biggest problem android smartphone users face and android is not doing anything about it till now and on the other hand apple devices are far better in these terms. I am talking about software updates and major OS updates. Apple iPhone promises Atleast 5 years of software updates whereas there is not fix rule for android and android smartphones are manufactured by various brands.
Android smartphones are very capable in terms of hardware these days, even a budget device has 8 GB of ram and atleast 64GB of Internal storage. So whats pulling android back? Yes, Software updates and lack of assurance that the device will run atleast for 5 years in Terms of sofftware.
Why Software Updates are Important?
Well we are surrounded by hackers and bad people on the Internet and these people use vulnerabilities to target devices and networks. If you are using outdated devices then there are huge chances that there are more than one vulnerability that can help these hackers to hack your device and take control of it. Your private photos, conversations and even your location, Live camera feed and mic feed is at risk.
There is a smartphone brand called “Fairphone” which is not very popular but it offers 8 years of software updates on android which is changing the whole scene here. Brands like Samsung and Xiaomi is also making software updates more regular for their flagship devices, Budget devices are still far behind in terms of timely and regular software updates.
Custom ROM can be the answer?
Yes, If you are expert in these things and know what you are doing then custom roms can be the answer for those devices where the original manufacturers are not pushing any updates for the device. But Custom Rom communities are not very perfectly managed and known for bug free roms hence official roms are much better in my opinion.
In my opinion smartphone brands should make devices that run longer and stays good for atleast 5 years in terms of software, Android ecosystem is very capable if used and developed in a better manner.
